- A cartoonist and painter living in Richmond, Virginia, Gary Brookins draws the cartoon panel "Pluggers" for Tribune Media Services. The feature appears in 75 newspapers nationwide, including the Boston Globe, Dallas Morning News, Denver Post, St. Paul Pioneer-Press, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, The Tennessean (Nashville) and Richmond Times-Dispatch. He also does the drawing for the comic strip "Shoe" which appears in 650 newspapers worldwide and is distributed by King Features Syndicate. After a long career as a syndicated political cartoonist based at the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Gary has escaped the daily grind of nine-to-five office life, traded in his India ink for oil paints and is happily meandering back roads all over the South, searching for those great American icons, rusty old Fords and Chevys. Very nice. And that frame sets it off perfectly. Were I affluent enough to be able to both buy that painting and travel to and from Virginia, I would get that for my sister in Oregon. Her and her hubby raise chickens and it would fit their decor wonderfully. And they are both "Shoe" and "Pluggers" fans.
